Research interests

I am a biologist and started working for the BMU/BMBF project “Flora Incognita” in May 2015. The project aims to develop a semi-automatic tool for plant determination using mobile devices. Ultimately, a combination of information extracted from the picture of the plant taken by the user and easily understandable questions concerning additional plant traits will lead to the determination of the plant species. Currently, the tool is developed using a set of pilot species. I will mainly work on the development and evaluation of the interaction with users of different botanical knowledge and coordinate the botanical subproject here at the institute.

I have been working at the institute since 1998, starting with my PhD on the carbon stocks of successional spruce forests in Thuringia and the Alps. I investigated carbon stocks in the biomass of trees, the organic layers of the forest floor and the mineral soil of the successional forests (aged 15 to 100 years) and compared them to grassland and permanent forest sites of the same region. The central question was whether afforestations, e.g. in the context of the Kyoto protocol, would enhance or deplete soil organic carbon stocks and which processes and factors are involved in their changes.

While I was working for the German Advisory Council on Global Change, I was mainly doing literature research on the potential of bioenergy within the framework of a sustainable energy system and on the relationship between biodiversity and poverty. In cooperation with the other assistants, I was also compiling texts on these subjects.

From 2005 to 2008, I have been project manager of CarboEurope-IP, a large-scale research project aiming at determining the European carbon balance.

Later on, I was working - within a larger peatland project - on an incubation experiment with intact peat columns, including vegetation. The main aim of this experiment was to determine the relationship between the dynamics of the water table and the emissions of methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide from the peat.

In 2010, I started dealing with incubations of soil samples from all over the world. These samples were examined for the radiocarbon signature of the carbon dioxide evolving from the soil through microbial respiration. The radiocarbon fraction gives us an idea about the age of the respired carbon and thus allows us to estimate turnover times of soil organic carbon.

Subsequently, I was working on the influence of hydrochar on the growth of wheat plants and its influence on nitrogen use by plants in competition with soil microbes
