Carbon fluxes of a natural Fennoscandian river
Rivers in Arctic and boreal regions play a crucial role for the carbon cycle by transporting, channeling, and releasing carbon. Despite their smaller surface area compared to wetlands and other terrestrial ecosystems, rivers contribute significantly to the carbon budget. However, large uncertainties in carbon emission estimates remain, also due to data scarcity in these regions. I will present first results of carbon flux measurements acquired with floating chambers during repeated field campaigns conducted at Teno river, a natural, undisturbed river that flows along the northern border between Finland and Norway and discharges into the Arctic Ocean. These results suggest overall very small carbon emissions to the atmosphere from Teno river. Results from this study could be used to benchmark Earth System and process-based models, and to evaluate the impact of disturbances on river carbon dynamics.
