Éamon Ó Catháin (He/Him)
Main Focus
I am currently carrying out an MSc thesis at MPI-BGC with Dr. Alex Winkler, in the Atmosphere-Biosphere Coupling group. We aim to create a deep learning emulator of the TRENDY ensemble and subsequently use a transfer learning approach to nudge it towards observational datasets. The aim is to create an emulator which can be used to run climate simulations with significantly reduced computing power as compared to DGVMs. Using the transfer learned version I will also provide physically aware, observationally constrained estimates of the global land carbon sink during the historical period and the contribution of its major drivers (CO2 fertilisation, land use and land cover change and temperature change).
I previously carried out an internship in summer 2024 with Dr. Phillip Papastefanou, in the Terrestrial Biosphere Modelling group. During which I assisted in the testing and troubleshooting of a new plant hydraulics module within the DGVM QUINCY through comparison against observations from Hainich experimental forest, Germany and sensitivity analysis.
