Trees emit CO2
through their stems, which substantially contribute to the tree and
whole ecosystem carbon (C) budget. A growing number of studies have
shown that CO2 diffusion to the atmosphere does not reflect the
respiratory activity of the underlying tissues and that many aspects of
tree stem C dynamics are still unknown. During this presentation, I will
explain the underlying uncertainties in tree stem C dynamics and how to
address them. I will provide answers to the following questions: What
can cause the mismatch between CO2 efflux and stem respiration? Can
internal transport of CO2 away from the production site and storage of
CO2 in the stem close this gap? Our results can help improving
estimations of tree and ecosystem C fluxes.
