Developing an advanced mass spectrometric technique to reveal molecular structures of dissolved organic matter

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is the most mobile and actively cycling fraction of organic matter that plays an important role in multiple biogeochemical processes. Molecular characterisation of DOM would give invaluable insights into its transformations, origins and fate. However, due to the extreme complexity of DOM, its structural analysis poses a great analytical challenge. Shotgun high resolution mass spectrometry is one of the main tools in DOM analysis; yet, the complexity of resulting fragmentation spectra hinders structural characterisation. In this talk, we will discuss a novel shotgun mass spectrometric approach to resolving these complex fragmentation spectra, which could offer new perspectives on the structural understanding of DOM.
