The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) in Jena is dedicated to interdisciplinary fundamental research in the field of Earth system sciences with a focus on climate and ecosystems. The internationally renowned institute, which currently employs around 250 people, celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022. Jena is known for high-tech industry, internationally renowned research institutions and a modern university, but it also has a beautiful natural setting in the green Saale valley with steep limestone slopes. The city of Jena has an active student scene and a diverse cultural life. We are looking for an Online editor / graphic designer in press and public relations team (m/f/d) for 9 months.

Background and position description

We are looking for a coworker to cover online editing and graphic design from June 2025, as well as for other press and public relations tasks. The successful applicant will support the central press and public relations team (50%) and the ATTO project of the Trumbore department (50%) in their ongoing work

Your tasks

  • Graphics: Conception, design and production of posters, graphics and statistics for scientific publications and conference contributions as well as templates for scientific reports, information material and administrative forms.
  • Online editorial office: Updating and implementing concepts for designing, expanding and revising the internet and intranet presence of the institute and of the ATTO project; preparing, posting and modifying editorial content; instructing and advising users; setting up, maintaining and operating the institute's and the ATTO project's social media channels.
  • Research coordination: Supporting research coordination in meeting regular external reporting requirements and in preparing and conducting internal institute elections. Supporting the public relations team in the conception, organization and implementation of public events.
  • ATTO project: Maintaining regional and international press contacts, processing regional and international press inquiries, maintaining a press distribution list, advising project coordinators on press and public relations activities. Maintaining a project-related photo and video database including thematic tagging (image pool). Selection and preparation of publishable photographs, graphics and videos from this image pool for integration into the various ATTO communication channels (website, social media, newsletter, reports, print products).

Your profile

  • A successfully completed university degree, a relevant traineeship or proven experience in press and public relations, and very good knowledge of German and English, both written and spoken, are required
  • Extensive experience in the technical configuration of editorial systems for internet and intranet sites (especially FIONA, MAX, WordPress) is required
  • Experience in the conception, design and distribution of print products is desirable
