Understanding how land management alters carbon and nitrogen cycling in Uruguayan agroecosystems

Max Planck Tandem group with Instituto Nacional de Investigación Agropecuaria (INIA), Montevideo, Uruguay

The Tandem Group led by Virginia Pravia studies the impacts of land use change and nitrogen and carbon management alternatives in agroecosystems in Uruguay. Research activities are linked to our Department Biogeochemical Processes (Susan Trumbore).

Research is based on long-term experiments, where isotopic techniques (14C, 13C and 15N) and simulation models will be used to generate and validate scientific knowledge about ecosystem services related to soil functions and carbon storage. This will allow the approach, design and monitoring of pathways for sustainable intensification of production systems under a changing climate.
